Mary B. Hetz has been designing and fabricating custom jewelry for over thirty years. Her career has been shaped by a lifelong love of animals, art, and the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which means finding beauty in imperfection and nature.
Mary’s style is the culmination of her lifelong passion for art, design and love of sculpture which gave life to her sterling silver jewelry collection with its very unique look. All of her designs are made using the time-honored method of lost-wax casting. She carves each piece using her wabi-sabi method of sculpting the wax. Each piece is a work of art and lovingly made slightly “imperfect’ in the carving process. She has the artistic ability for accuracy and perfection, but is drawn to the random and rough hewn shapes and textures she gives each piece.
This raw and organic style makes each piece one of a kind and the superior quality allows her jewelry to be passed on for years.
Hetz’s sterling silver and 18k gold vermeil necklaces, bracelets and rings have been worn by the likes of Kate Moss, as well as other top fashion models and celebrities, and has graced the covers of Cosmopolitan and Vogue.
Beginning in the early 80’s, Mary designed unique “wearable art” with her successful beaded line of belts, earrings, necklaces and hair accessories. She invented a technique of wrapping wire with rows of beads around leather that was cut into geometric or animal shapes. Each row of beads was very painstakingly strung to form a pattern. You can see examples of her beaded work on the “press” page.
In addition to the beaded line, she added a new collection of sterling silver and 18k gold vermeil in the late 80's. All of her designs, then and now, are made using the time-honored method of lost-wax casting. She carves each piece using her “wabi-sabi” method of sculpting the wax.
Her brands were sold at renowned retailers like Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Barney’s, as well as, art galleries and high-end boutiques across the country and in Europe including Harrods of London.
In addition to her success with jewelry, in the early 90’s, Mary became involved in the craft industry and was a partner in Crafty Productions until 2013. Crafty Productions began by selling beaded jewelry kits so that crafters could make her beadwork designs. During that time she created thousands pieces of art for their other successful lines which were sold to the major craft retail chains such as Michael’s, Jo-Ann Fabric and Hobby Lobby.
Today, as you see here, Mary continues to sell her uniquely designed sterling silver and 18K gold vermeil jewelry. Her new collection represents the culmination of her early years of design now merged with her new passion for the sensual and spiritual shapes and textures inspired by wabi-sabi, as well as classical art and design. These designs shape and form her new collection that continues to inspire and surprise.
